Harassment of Students

ACT public schools are safe, respectful and supportive learning and teaching communities that promote student wellbeing.

ACT public schools establish safe, respectful and supportive environments by:

  • committing to develop safe schools through a whole-school and evidence-based approach;
  • building the self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social management capabilities of students to engage in respectful relationships;
  • applying restorative and disciplinary measures;
  • supporting teachers to meet the social and emotional needs of students in the school environment;
  • fostering an engaging, inclusive and responsive school environment;
  • involving the school community in the development of school processes and procedures that promote student safety and wellbeing;
  • ensuring schools are organised in ways that provide a duty of care;
  • valuing diversity and promoting positive social behaviour; and
  • providing intensive, individualised behavioural support for students that require additional support in an appropriate and timely manner.

Homework

Homework provides for 3-way communication between parents/carers, teachers and student which enables parents/carers to value and support the knowledge and skills the student is developing at school. Homework will be focused on the student’s individual Learning Intentions, which is their next small step in learning, in Reading, Writing and Maths. The suggested strategies provide meaningful activities which incorporate the consolidation of skills that the student is focusing on at school. In a balanced homework program students will ideally have opportunities to work both independently and with their parents/carers. Homework is a very important opportunity to value and celebrate the student’s learning.

Other important home activities and experiences should be provided by the parents/carers to develop:

  • social skills that build consideration, acceptance and tolerance of others
  • independence in preparing for school and in other situations
  • fine motor skills (finger strength and control/precision) eg through colouring inside lines etc
  • gross motor skills (catching and kicking a ball etc) eg through sports
