SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS INITIATIVE

At Bonython students are active in working towards a positive sustainable future.  In 2005 we responded to the most pressing issue of our time and became a pilot school in the Australian Sustainable School Initiative (AUSSI).  In 2007 we won the ACT Sustainable Cities Sustainable School Award.

This initiative has developed through a number of focus points:

  • The Garden
  • Waste Minimisation
  • Solar Electricity
  • Curriculum Development
  • Water and Energy Use

Wheel-Barrow-BoysAll our students, staff, the preschool and parents have had the opportunity to help develop and implement different programs and practices to guide us towards more sustainable living.

The results of these innovations and the focus on sustainable practices cannot be measured by academic results but rather by changes in behaviour and attitudes to sustainability and the environment.  When we began our journey, recycling at Bonython was a token trash pack for paper that most often ended up in the hopper.  This year we have seen a more global focus on environmental issues and good practice is becoming embedded in our daily programs. Sustainability practices are increasingly being used as a vehicle for teaching skills rather than another addition.
